Dhāraṇā 30 · Subtler and Subtler

Follow the constituents of body or world as each dissolves into the one more subtle than it, until at the end Parā herself stands manifest.

Where the last dhāraṇā destroyed the world in one blaze, this one takes it apart in order. The verse says: meditate on the tattvas of your own body, or of the world — sūkṣma-sūkṣmatarāṇi, each subtler than the last — as going to their dissolution, and at the end the Supreme, Parā, is made manifest.

The ladderतत्त्व-लय

Manifestation, in the Āgama's account, descends from Śiva through thirty-six tattvas down to earth. This practice climbs the same stair in reverse. Take the body as it presents itself: solid. Let solidity dissolve into fluidity, fluidity into heat, heat into movement of air, air into bare space; let the senses withdraw into the mind that reads them, the mind into the deeper instruments, and those into the subject who holds them all. At each step the coarser is seen to have been nothing but the subtler, contracted.

Be honest about what the verse gives and what it does not. It names no sequence and counts no steps — the ladder itself is supplied by the tradition's tattva-scheme, not by this verse. What the verse insists on is only the direction (subtle, then subtler) and the destination: dissolution carried to the very end, not abandoned at some pleasant resting-point along the way.

The end of the stair

Every rung is left behind, including the highest that can still be thought. What manifests then is not the last rung but Parā — the supreme Śakti who was doing the climbing, the dissolving, and the appearing all along. The feminine name matters: what you reach is not an inert summit but the living power of consciousness, and the verse's word is vyajyate — she is not attained, she is revealed, the way a face is revealed when a veil drops. Nothing has moved except the covering.

Meditating on the principles (tattvas) — subtler and subtler — of one's own body or of the world as coming to dissolution, at the end the Supreme (Parā) is made manifest.
