Dhāraṇā 31 · The Śakti Grown Faint
Attend to the breath-power where it thins and fails at the dvādaśānta, then enter the heart with it — the door to svātantrya.
The breath does not end abruptly. It goes out full and arrives at its far limit pīnā ca durbalā — the verse's odd, precise pairing: still gross, yet grown weak — like a wave that reaches the sand with its force spent. This dhāraṇā watches the śakti of the breath exactly there, at the dvādaśānta, the space twelve finger-breadths beyond the nostrils where the moving power thins to almost nothing, and then follows what remains of it into the heart.
How to work with itद्वादशान्त
Breathe naturally and place attention not on the nostrils but out beyond them, at the point where the outgoing current dies away. Do not push the breath to reach further; the practice is in the fading, not the distance. When feeling for that faintness has become steady, the verse gives the second movement: praviśya hṛdaye — entering, meditate in the heart. The attention that has learned to rest on an almost-vanished śakti outside now settles on the same almost-vanished śakti at the centre. One who does this, the verse says flatly, is muktaḥ — and attains svātantrya, the sovereign freedom that Recognition treats as the master-name of consciousness itself.
Why faintness is the door
Strong sensation captures attention and holds it on the surface; a sensation at the edge of vanishing forces attention to become as subtle as its object. In following the breath-śakti to the place where it is barely there, the mind is quietly stripped of its coarseness — and a mind made that subtle, set down in the heart, has nothing left in it to obstruct what the heart already is. The weakness of the śakti is not a defect to be corrected. It is the whole method.
पीनां च दुर्बलां शक्तिं ध्यात्वा द्वादशगोचरे । प्रविश्य हृदये ध्यायन्मुक्तः स्वातन्त्र्यमाप्नुयात् ॥ ५४ ॥
Meditating on the (breath-)Śakti, gross yet grown weak and faint, in the range of the dvādaśānta, and then entering the heart and meditating there, the liberated one attains autonomy (svātantrya).
