Dhāraṇā 94 · Placing and withdrawing the gaze

Fix the gaze on an object, then withdraw it slowly — the cognition of the thing, taken back along with the mind that held it, leaves the practitioner an abode of the void.

A two-stroke practice, as simple as breathing: place the gaze, then take it back. Everything depends on the second stroke being done slowly enough that you can watch the object's cognition come home with it.

The method

Choose any object — the verse says kvacid vastuni, on some thing, with superb indifference to which. Rest the gaze on it until the perception is full and settled: the jar is fully a jar. Then withdraw the gaze — śanaiḥ, slowly, the word the text uses whenever the speed of an act is itself the technique. Not a glance away, which merely swaps one object for the next, but a gradual retraction, as if reeling the seeing back into the eyes. And here is the delicate part: let the knowing of the object retract too. The jar-cognition, deprived of its support, comes loose; do not re-house it in a thought about jars. The verse says the cognition is withdrawn citta-sahitam — together with the mind itself.

How it works

Ordinarily a perception never ends; it is only replaced. Attention leaves the jar because it has already grasped the window, and the mind experiences an unbroken chain of objects, which it takes for its own continuity. Slow withdrawal breaks the chain at a place replacement cannot reach: the object fades while nothing arrives, and the knowing that was shaped as jar subsides unshaped. Repeated, the practice teaches the mind the one thing the chain of objects had hidden from it — that it can exist un-propped. The verse's promise is a residence, not a flash: śūnyālayo bhavet, one becomes the dwelling-place of the void. The void here is not deprivation but the mind's own face with nothing in front of it.

क्वचिद्वस्तुनि विन्यस्य शनैर्दृष्टिं निवर्तयेत्‌ । तज्ज्ञानं चित्तसहितं देवि शून्यालयो भवेत्‌ ॥ ११७ ॥

Fixing the gaze on some object, one should slowly withdraw it; that cognition, together with the mind (and its object), O Goddess, makes one become the abode of the void.

किसी वस्तु पर दृष्टि स्थापित कर, धीरे-धीरे उसे लौटा ले; हे देवि, वह ज्ञान चित्त (और विषय) सहित (लीन होकर) साधक को शून्य का आलय बना देता है।
