Recognition
Dhāraṇā 82 · The consciousness in another's body
Experience the awareness in another's body as immediately as your own; dropping the body's claim to special concern, one becomes pervading within days.
Dhāraṇā 75 contemplated one consciousness in all bodies as a truth. This verse converts the truth into an exercise with a startlingly concrete promise attached: practise it, and dinaiḥ — within days — one becomes pervading.
The method
Svavad anya-śarīre 'pi saṃvittim anubhāvayet — one should experience the awareness in another's body as in one's own. The verb matters: not think about, not infer, but anubhāvayet, bring to felt experience. Sit where you can quietly observe someone — or call a person vividly to presence — and instead of perceiving them as an object in your field, shift the weight: there is seeing happening there, warmth, the felt hum of being alive, exactly as here. Let that knowing be as immediate as the sensation of your own hands. Their awareness is not evidence to be deduced from behaviour; it is saṃvitti, and saṃvitti is what you are made of, so meeting it is recognition, not speculation.
The second movement is subtractive: apekṣāṃ sva-śarīrasya tyaktvā — giving up the special concern for one's own body. Not its care, but its monopoly: the standing rule that sensations here matter absolutely and sensations there matter theoretically. As the rule relaxes, awareness stops snapping back to home base after every excursion — and vyāpī dinair bhavet, in days one becomes pervasive.
The honest scope of the promise
The verse promises pervasion, not telepathy — becoming vyāpin, wide, no longer fenced by one skin. Its practical face is unmistakable: the neighbour's hunger begins to weigh like one's own, another's joy arrives without the detour through comparison. What ethics commands from outside — love your neighbour as yourself — this dhāraṇā produces from inside, as plain description: the as yourself stops being a metaphor. Compassion here is not cultivated; it is what pervasion feels like.
स्ववदन्यशरीरेऽपि संवित्तिमनुभावयेत् । अपेक्षां स्वशरीरस्य त्यक्त्वा व्यापी दिनैर्भवेत् ॥ १०५ ॥
One should experience the consciousness in another's body just as in one's own; giving up concern for one's own body, in a few days one becomes all-pervading.
