Dhāraṇā 75 · One consciousness in all bodies
Consciousness is the nature of every body without distinction anywhere; contemplating all things as made of it, one conquers becoming itself.
The deepest habit of embodied life is the certainty that my consciousness is mine — a private lamp behind these particular eyes. This dhāraṇā dissolves the possessive: awareness is the nature of all bodies, and it does not come in portions.
The contemplation
Cid-dharmā sarva-deheṣu — consciousness is the essential character in all bodies — viśeṣo nāsti kutracit: there is no distinction anywhere. Begin where the claim is easiest to test: the person in front of you. Behind their eyes, exactly what is behind yours — not a similar awareness, the verse insists, but awareness without difference, since awareness has no features by which two instances could differ. Extend it deliberately: the stranger, the enemy, the animal, every sentient form. One light, many lamps; and the lamps differ while the light cannot.
Then the practice proper: tanmayaṃ sarvaṃ bhāvayan — contemplating everything as made of that. Sustained, it must be sustained in the street as much as on the seat: every face encountered during a day is an appearance in the one consciousness contemplating it. The verse's fruit is stated in a single compound: such a person is bhavajit — a conqueror of becoming, of saṃsāra itself.
Why this conquers becoming
Saṃsāra is not a place; it is a perspective — awareness contracted to one body's fortunes, riding one birth-and-death line as its whole story. Fear, craving and rivalry are that contraction doing its arithmetic. But a consciousness recognised as undivided has no line to ride: nothing that happens to one body diminishes what is equally the nature of all. The conquest of becoming is not escape from the world but the collapse of the private vantage from which the world was a threat. What remains is the one light, looking out of every window at once.
चिद्धर्मा सर्वदेहेषु विशेषो नास्ति कुत्रचित् । अतश्च तन्मयं सर्वं भावयन्भवजिज्जनः ॥ ९८ ॥
Consciousness (cit) is the essential nature in all bodies; there is no distinction anywhere. Therefore, contemplating everything as filled with that (consciousness), a person conquers becoming (saṃsāra).
समस्त शरीरों में चिति ही धर्म (स्वरूप) है; कहीं कोई भेद नहीं है। अतः सब कुछ उसी (चैतन्य) से तन्मय भावित करता हुआ मनुष्य संसार को जीत लेता है।
