Dhāraṇā 77 · The world as a magic show

See the universe as a conjuror's display, as a vast painting, as a whirling — and from that seeing, bliss rises of its own accord.

Three images are offered, any one sufficient: the world as indrajāla, a conjuror's illusion; as citrakarma, a painted panorama; as bhramat, a whirling. Hold any of them while looking at everything, and the verse promises not insight first but sukhodgama — an upwelling of happiness.

The method

Take the images one at a time, on different days. The magic show: walk through your ordinary scenes — street, kitchen, workplace — seeing them as a master illusionist's performance: utterly convincing, genuinely appearing, and without the solid substance they advertise. The painting: see the visual field as a single vast canvas, every depth-cue a painter's trick, people and buildings laid out — vyastam, spread, distributed — in one composed picture. The whirling: sense the whole scene as turning, nothing in it stable, everything in circulation — bodies renewing, situations dissolving, the day itself spinning past. The verse asks for both dhyāyataḥ and paśyataḥ — meditating on it thus and seeing it thus: not a thought held beside experience but a way experience itself comes to look.

Why lightness, not nihilism

Call the world an illusion in most systems and the conclusion is grim: turn away from it. Here the conclusion is bliss, and the difference is the magician. In this tradition the show is consciousness's own free performance — your own deepest self is the conjuror — so seeing through the trick is not disillusionment but delight, the delight of an audience that suddenly recognises the artist. Weight, threat and grinding seriousness belong to a world mistaken for dead matter; a world recognised as display can be loved and enjoyed without being feared. The bliss the verse promises is simply what the mind feels when the world stops being heavy.

इन्द्रजालमयं विश्वं व्यस्तं वा चित्रकर्मवत्‌ । भ्रमद्वा ध्यायतः सर्वं पश्यतश्च सुखोद्गमः ॥ १०० ॥

The universe is like a magic show, or spread out like a painting, or whirling round; for one who meditates upon and sees all of it thus, there is an upsurge of bliss.

यह विश्व इन्द्रजाल के समान है, अथवा चित्रकर्म की भाँति बिखरा हुआ, या घूमता हुआ; ऐसा सब कुछ ध्याते और देखते हुए साधक को सुख का उद्गम होता है।
