Dhāraṇā 61 · The bearer of infinite light

Partial knowledge is what produces duality — light outside, then darkness; know the whole universe as Bhairava's own form and carry unbounded light instead.

This verse is less an exercise than a diagnosis with a cure attached. The disease: kiñcij-jñātam — the little that is known. Knowing a fragment, any fragment, splits the world into the lit patch you know and the dark remainder you don't, and that split is duality itself.

The diagnosis

Watch how ordinary knowing works. Each act of cognition illuminates one thing — this face, this task, this worry — and by that very act consigns everything else to background darkness. Outer light, then darkness, the verse says: bāhyālokas tamaḥ punaḥ. The alternation is not a flaw in attention to be fixed by concentrating harder; it is the structure of partial knowledge as such. A knower who knows by fragments lives in a strobe — and takes the strobe for the world.

The cure

The remedy is not to know more things — the fragments never sum to the whole — but to change what knowing is taken to be. Know the universe and everything in it, viśvādi, as bhairavaṃ rūpam, the very form of Bhairava. Then no cognition lights a fragment against a dark ground, because there is no ground outside the light: every object known is the knower's own shining, wearing a shape. One who holds this becomes ananta-prakāśa-bhṛt — a bearer of infinite light, light with no remainder left over to be dark.

As practice: several times a day, at the moment of noticing any single thing sharply, widen — not the gaze, but the attribution. This too is That; and what surrounds it is not darkness but the same light unattended. Done often, the strobe slows, and what flickered begins to stand steady.

किञ्चिज्ज्ञातं द्वैतदायि बाह्यालोकस्तमः पुनः । विश्वादि भैरवं रूपं ज्ञात्वानन्तप्रकाशभृत्‌ ॥ ८४ ॥

The little that is known produces duality — outer light, and then darkness. Knowing the universe and all else as the very form of Bhairava, one becomes a bearer of infinite light.
