Dhāraṇā 22 · A Moment of Emptiness
Even a single moment of feeling the body's place as sheer void makes the practitioner a partaker of the thought-free nature.
Twice now the body has been dissolved into space — in all directions, then at two chosen points. This verse strips the practice to its minimum and names its price: kṣaṇa-mātram. One moment. Feel, for a single instant, nothing but void where the body is, and the verse counts that instant as enough to taste the goal.
The method
In tanū-deśe — the place of the body, the region your trunk and limbs seem to occupy — let there be śūnyataiva: emptiness only, the particle eva shutting the door on any remainder. Not a thinned body, not a transparent body: no body, just the unoccupied place. And hold it merely for a moment. This is not the consolation prize of the full practice; it is a deliberate change of strategy. A contemplation asked to last invites the mind to maintain it, and maintenance is itself a thought — the subtle labour of checking, renewing, comparing this second with the one before. A contemplation of one moment has no time to be maintained. It can only be total or absent. The verse chooses totality over duration, and its wager is that one complete instant outweighs an hour of managed approximation.
The sentence that folds into itself
The second line spends three of its five words on one stem: nirvikalpaṃ nirvikalpo nirvikalpa-svarūpa-bhāk — contemplating the thought-free, one becomes thought-free, and partakes of the thought-free nature. Object, subject, and result collapse into a single word deliberately: when what is attended to is emptiness, the attending has nothing to push against and goes empty too, and what is then "attained" was the attender's own nature all along. Grammar is made to perform the doctrine. Use this dhāraṇā in the gaps of a day — waiting, between tasks, on the point of standing up. It is the text's own miniature, made for exactly the moments a longer practice cannot reach, and every flash of it wears a groove that the settled state will later run in.
तनूदेशे शून्यतैव क्षणमात्रं विभावयेत् । निर्विकल्पं निर्विकल्पो निर्विकल्पस्वरूपभाक् ॥ ४५ ॥
One should contemplate, even for a single moment, the region of the body as nothing but void. Becoming thought-free in the thought-free (void), one partakes of the thought-free nature.
शरीर के स्थान में केवल शून्य की ही क्षण भर भावना करे। निर्विकल्प में निर्विकल्प होकर साधक निर्विकल्प स्वरूप का भागी हो जाता है।
