Dhāraṇā 10 · On Anything At All
By the same method, contemplation placed anywhere — on empty space, a bare wall, a worthy vessel — dissolves of itself and grants the boon.
Here the text pauses to say something about all its own methods. By a sequence of this kind — the words are īdṛśena krameṇaiva — contemplation may be aimed yatra kutrāpi, anywhere whatsoever. The doorway was never the object. It was the way attention was placed on it.
The three examples
- Śūnyeon a void
- Open space, interior or exterior — attention rested on sheer room, with nothing in it to grip.
- Kuḍyeon a wall
- The homeliest object imaginable: a blank wall. Gazed at steadily, without naming or wandering, a wall gives the mind nothing to eat — and a mind given nothing to eat eventually stops chewing. Traditions east and west of Kashmir discovered wall-gazing independently; this half-line is its āgamic warrant.
- Pare pātreon a supreme vessel
- The received translation reads a worthy recipient — a person: the teacher, or any being in whom awareness stands undisguised. Attention rested on such a one is contemplation aimed at consciousness through its clearest local window.
In practice the three are one discipline with three difficulties. Space gives attention nothing and the mind invents; the wall gives it something and the mind labels; the person gives it someone and the mind relates. Work whichever surface you have, and treat invention, labelling and relating as the same single slippage — attention curling back into commentary instead of resting where it was placed.
The mechanism the verse states
Its second line carries the whole doctrine of bhāvanā in three words: the contemplation, svayaṃ līnā, dissolved of itself, becomes varapradā, the giver of the boon. Read that sequence carefully. The contemplation is not interrupted, not completed, not rewarded from outside; it melts, on its own, into what it was aimed at — and the melting is the gift. A contemplation that persisted would have failed. This is the measure offered for every practice on this site: not the vividness of the object held, but the quiet disappearance of the holding. Whoever has understood this verse can, in principle, throw the other hundred and eleven away — which is precisely why the text keeps them: almost no one understands it until some one doorway, entered bodily, has taught it.
ईदृशेन क्रमेणैव यत्र कुत्रापि चिन्तना । शून्ये कुड्ये परे पात्रे स्वयं लीना वरप्रदा ॥ ३३ ॥
By this very method, contemplation directed anywhere at all — upon a void, a (blank) wall, or a worthy recipient — becomes self-dissolved and bestows the boon (of realization).
इसी क्रम से कहीं भी — शून्य में, (कोरी) दीवार पर, या किसी योग्य पात्र में — की गई चिन्तना स्वयं लीन होकर वर (आत्मबोध) प्रदान करती है।
