Dhāraṇā 87 · When the agitation ends

Three doors — failure of the sense-supports, knowledge of Śakti, dissolution of mind — each opening onto an absorption whose turbulence, when it subsides, leaves the form of Bhairava.

This verse is less a single technique than a small map. It names three ways an absorption can arise, and then makes one claim about all of them: the absorption itself is not the goal. Even samāveśa has a turbulence, and Bhairava's form appears when that turbulence ends.

The three doors

The compressed Sanskrit of the first door is read differently by different translators — incapacity of the supports, or incapacity at them — and the honest position is that the verse does not settle it. What all readings share is the direction: a breakdown, not an achievement, is being named as an entrance.

The claim that matters

The verse's real teaching is in its second half: jāta-śakti-samāveśa-kṣobhānte — at the end of the agitation of the absorption that has arisen. Absorption states are themselves events, with onset, intensity, texture. A practitioner can spend years collecting them. The text's instruction is to stay for the end — the moment the wave of immersion itself flattens — because what remains when even ecstasy subsides is not another state but the ground all states occurred in. That ground is what it calls the vapus, the form, of Bhairava.

The three doors are not equally available on a given day — the senses' incapacity arrives unbidden, the knowledge of Śakti is cultivated, the mind's dissolution is granted — but what they share is the verse's real object: the subsiding. The instruction is to watch the settling, not the storm that preceded it; as the agitation of the absorption drains away, what remains standing, in the text's own words, is the form of Bhairava.

Through incapacity at the supports (of the senses), or by the knowledge of Śakti, or by dissolution of the mind — at the end of the agitation of the absorption that has thus arisen, the form of Bhairava (is realized).
