Dhāraṇā 84 · The great conviction

Omniscient, all-doing, pervading, the Supreme Lord — that very one am I, Śiva by nature: held with firmness, this conviction makes one Śiva.

After practices of gaps, voids and abstentions comes a dhāraṇā of pure affirmation. Nothing is stilled, emptied or observed; a single sentence is held until it hardens from words into fact: the Supreme Lord — that very one am I.

The method

The verse hands over the conviction fully formed: sarvajñaḥ sarvakartā ca vyāpakaḥ parameśvaraḥ — omniscient, all-doing, pervading, the Supreme Lord — sa evāhaṃ śaiva-dharmā: that very one am I, whose nature is Śiva's. Note sa eva — that very one. Not 'I am like him', not 'a spark of him'; the identification is total, and it is asserted, not argued. The practice is dārḍhya, firmness: returning to the conviction until it acquires the same settled, pre-reflective certainty that 'I am this body' has now. That certainty was also installed by repetition; this dhāraṇā installs its replacement by the same route. Śivo bhavet — one becomes Śiva — by firmness alone.

Bhāvanā, not boast

Held by the ego, the sentence would be megalomania — the small self awarding itself omniscience while still identified with one anxious body. The tradition's safeguard is in the wording: the conviction is sa evāham, THAT one is I — the movement runs from the Lord downward into the 'I', not from 'me' upward into godhood. What is affirmed is not that this person can do everything, but that what says 'I' in this person is, and always was, the one awareness that does everything everywhere. The person is not inflated; the reference of the word 'I' is corrected. This is bhāvanā in its strongest sense: creative contemplation that does not describe a fact but uncovers one by dwelling in it.

सर्वज्ञः सर्वकर्ता च व्यापकः परमेश्वरः । स एवाहं शैवधर्मा इति दार्ढ्याच्छिवो भवेत्‌ ॥ १०७ ॥

'Omniscient, all-doing, all-pervading, the Supreme Lord — that very One am I, of the nature of Śiva.' By firmness in this (conviction), one becomes Śiva.

'सर्वज्ञ, सर्वकर्ता, व्यापक, परमेश्वर — वही मैं हूँ, शिव-स्वरूप' — इस (भावना) की दृढ़ता से साधक शिव हो जाता है।
