Dhāraṇā 70 · Seeing through the tattvas
Māyā the deluder is nothing but the limiting act of limited power; reflect discerningly on what each tattva does to you, and stand apart from all of them.
Among practices of darkness, needles and bare vowels stands one dhāraṇā for the philosopher: liberation by accurate analysis. Its wager is that bondage cannot survive being precisely described.
The method
The verse opens with a specimen of the analysis it teaches: māyā vimohinī nāma — the famous deluder Māyā — kalāyāḥ kalanaṃ sthitam, consists in nothing but the limiting operation of kalā, limited agency. Unpacked: the great cosmic veil is not a monster or a mystery; it is a describable function — the act by which unbounded capacity is scaled down to 'I can do a little.' Then the instruction generalises: ityādi-dharmaṃ tattvānāṁ kalayan — reflecting in this way on the operations of the tattvas, each in turn. What does each level of the map actually do to experience? Which limitation is its signature? Knowing time as the tattva that serialises, attachment as the tattva that fixates, one names each bar of the cage by its function.
The fruit is stated in two words: pṛthag bhavet — one becomes separate. What is seen as an operation performed on you is thereby no longer you. The analysis is the detachment.
Why description liberates
A limitation binds only while it is transparent — worn as the self rather than seen as a garment. 'I can only do so much' feels like a fact about me until kalā is identified, at which point it becomes a fact about a tattva: a process, with a name, a place on the map, and a scope. The knower of a process stands outside it by the very act of knowing it. This dhāraṇā thus runs the tattva scheme in reverse: the same ladder down which consciousness descended into contraction is climbed back up, rung by named rung, by discernment alone.
माया विमोहिनी नाम कलायाः कलनं स्थितम् । इत्यादिधर्मं तत्त्वानां कलयन्पृथग्भवेत् ॥ ९३ ॥
'Māyā, the deluder, consists in the holding-fast (kalana) of limited power (kalā).' Reflecting that such are the (binding) attributes of the tattvas, one stands apart (free) from them.
'विमोहिनी माया (परिमित) कला का कलन (सीमित करना) ही है' — इत्यादि तत्त्वों के धर्म का विवेचन करता हुआ साधक उनसे पृथक् (मुक्त) हो जाता है।
