Dhāraṇā 67 · The self as open sky

Meditate on your own Self as space itself, walled in by no direction; the power of consciousness, left without a prop, shows you her true face.

Earlier dhāraṇās made the body supportless or dissolved space into the head. This one goes to the root of the series: not the body, not space, but you — meditated upon as sky, with no direction left standing to enclose you.

The method

Vyomākāraṃ svam ātmānaṃ dhyāyet — meditate on your own self as having the form of space. Begin honestly with the felt sense of being someone: a located presence, roughly body-shaped, facing the world from behind the eyes. Now contemplate that presence as space — not as occupying space, but as being of space's own nature: transparent, without surface, without inside and outside. Then the verse's decisive qualifier: digbhir anāvṛtam, unenclosed by the directions. East does not bound you, nor up, nor down. Wherever a direction goes, you are already there; no bearing points away from you.

This is a dhyāna to be dwelt in, not glimpsed — return to it daily, and hold it until the sense of location genuinely loosens rather than being merely described to oneself as loose.

What acts when nothing supports

The second line names the mechanism with doctrinal exactness. When the self is contemplated as unenclosed space, citi śakti — the power of consciousness — becomes nirāśrayā, without any resting-place. All her ordinary props are identifications: this body, this history, this point of view. Deprived of every prop, she does not collapse; she svarūpaṃ darśayet — shows her own true form. The revelation is her act, not yours. Your entire contribution is the withdrawal of walls; what stands revealed when the last wall goes was never built and needs no builder.

व्योमाकारं स्वमात्मानं ध्यायेद्दिग्भिरनावृतम्‌ । निराश्रया चितिः शक्तिः स्वरूपं दर्शयेत्तदा ॥ ९० ॥

One should meditate on one's own Self as having the form of space, unenclosed by any of the directions; then the supportless power of consciousness reveals one's own true nature.

अपने आत्मा को आकाश के समान, दिशाओं से अनावृत (असीम) ध्याए; तब निराश्रय चिति-शक्ति अपना स्वरूप प्रकट कर देती है।
