Dhāraṇā 65 · The bare vowel

Recite the letter A stripped of bindu and visarga — the alphabet's first sound with nothing appended — and a flood of knowing rises without warning.

Most mantra practice builds — syllable on syllable, name on name. This dhāraṇā strips instead, and does not stop until only one sound is left: a, the first letter, recited with nothing before it, nothing after it, and nothing riding on it.

The method

The verse's precision is the practice. Recite akāra — the vowel a — abindum, without the bindu, the nasal point that would make it aṃ, and avisargam, without the visarga, the final breath that would make it aḥ. In the grammar of mantra these two endings are not ornaments: bindu gathers a sound to a concentrated point, visarga emits it outward. To refuse both is to refuse the two directions a sound can go. What remains is utterance that neither condenses nor departs — sheer opening of the voice, sounded and held nowhere.

Recite it slowly, inwardly or in the softest voice, letting each a be complete in itself. There is nothing to develop and nowhere for the sound to travel; the recitation simply keeps returning awareness to the unadorned first opening of articulation. Then the verse's promise, and note its adverb: sahasā — suddenly. A great flood of knowledge rises, jñānaughaḥ, and the verse does not say it resembles the Supreme Lord; it says it is him — parameśvaraḥ.

Why aअ

In Trika doctrine a is anuttara — the unsurpassed — the first letter of the alphabet and the initial vibration from which the whole garland of phonemes, and through them the whole manifested order, unfolds. Every other sound is a shaped by some closure of the mouth; every other thing is the Absolute shaped by some closure of awareness. To rest in the unmodified vowel is therefore to rest at the fountainhead before any shaping — which is why nothing needs to be added for the flood to rise. See Mātṛkā and Mālinī for the full alphabet doctrine this practice condenses.

अबिन्दुमविसर्गं च अकारं जपतो महान्‌ । उदेति देवि सहसा ज्ञानौघः परमेश्वरः ॥ ८८ ॥

For one who recites the letter 'A' without bindu and without visarga, there suddenly arises, O Goddess, a great flood of knowledge — the Supreme Lord himself.

बिन्दु और विसर्ग से रहित 'अ' कार का जप करने वाले के भीतर, हे देवि, सहसा महान् ज्ञान का ओघ (प्रवाह) — परमेश्वर — उदित हो जाता है।
