Dhāraṇā 37 · The Middle Between Two Things

Hold two objects in cognition, take refuge in the middle between them, drop both at once — and Reality shines in the gap.

Every practice so far has emptied the field. This one crowds it — deliberately — with exactly two things. Hold two objects in awareness, says the verse, and settle into the madhya, the middle between them; then yugapac ca dvayaṃ tyaktvā — abandoning both simultaneously — Reality shines forth in that middle.

The methodमध्य

Choose two objects of attention. They may be two things seen, two sounds, a sensation and a thought — the verse says only ubhayor bhāvayoḥ, two states of cognition. Attend to both, alternately at first, then together, until both are held in one span of awareness. Now ask: what is attention standing in when it holds both? Not in either object — it would then have dropped the other. It stands between. Settle there, in the betweenness itself, the verse's word being samāśrayet — take refuge in it, lean your whole weight on it.

Then the stroke that makes the practice: release both objects at once. Not one after the other — sequential dropping just walks attention from thing to thing, which is the mind's ordinary gait. Dropped together, the two supports vanish and the middle they were bracketing does not: it stands revealed as what was holding them, and the verse says Reality — tattvam — blazes up exactly there.

Why the middle is not a place

The middle between two cognitions is not a third cognition, a thin object squeezed between fat ones. It is the awareness in which both cognitions were arising — nameless while occupied, obvious the instant it is vacated without being exited. This is the madhya that runs through the whole tradition: the Pratyabhijñāhṛdaya devotes a sūtra to its unfolding, and the breath-practices of this very text — the pause between prāṇa and apāna — are the same discovery made in the respiratory register. Any two of anything will do, because the middle of every pair is the same middle.

उभयोर्भावयोर्ज्ञाने ध्यात्वा मध्यं समाश्रयेत्‌ । युगपच्च द्वयं त्यक्त्वा मध्ये तत्त्वं प्रकाशते ॥ ६० ॥

On the cognition of two states (objects), one should meditate and take refuge in the middle between them; abandoning both at once, Reality shines forth in that middle.

दो भावों (वस्तुओं) के ज्ञान में ध्यान कर उनके मध्य का आश्रय ले; दोनों को एक साथ छोड़ देने पर मध्य में तत्त्व प्रकाशित हो जाता है।
