Dhāraṇā 35 · Gazing into the Empty Jar

Cast the gaze into an empty vessel, set aside its walls, dissolve into the space it holds — and become one with it that instant.

After the cosmic sweep of the last dhāraṇā, this one fits in a kitchen. Take an empty vessel — the verse says ghaṭādi, a pot or the like — and cast your gaze into it, bhittīs tyaktvā, leaving the walls aside. The promise is startlingly immediate: tat-kṣaṇāt, that very instant, dissolution into the emptiness; and by that dissolution, tan-mayo bhavet — one becomes made of it.

Doing itघट-आकाश

Set an empty pot before you in decent light. The eye will go first to the clay — rim, curve, glaze, shadow. Let it. Then make the one adjustment the verse asks for: withdraw interest from the walls and let the gaze rest on what the walls enclose. You are not looking at the interior surface but into the hollow — attending to the space itself as the object. At first this feels like looking at nothing, because it is; stay with it, softly, without straining the eyes. At some moment the attention slips from the container to the contained, and the verse claims that slip is instantaneous absorption.

The instruction leaving the walls aside is doing all the work. The walls are what make the space seem to be 'the pot's space' — a small captive emptiness. Drop the walls from attention and the captivity was never real: the space in the jar is not a piece of space, any more than the sky seen through a window is a piece of sky.

Why a pot can liberate

The jar's emptiness and the emptiness contemplated across the whole universe in the previous dhāraṇā differ in circumference, not in kind. That is the wager of this practice: void is not quantitative. A mind genuinely dissolved into the hollow of one pot has dissolved into the hollow of everything, because there is only one hollow. The tradition loved this pot-space figure for exactly that reason — break the jar and nothing happens to the space. The walls were the only news, and they were never walls to it.

One should cast the gaze into an empty vessel such as a pot, leaving aside the (intervening) walls; reaching dissolution into it that very instant, by that dissolution one becomes one with it.

घट आदि खाली पात्र में, बीच की दीवारों (आधारों) को छोड़कर, दृष्टि डाले; उसी क्षण उसमें लय को प्राप्त होकर, उस लय से साधक तन्मय हो जाता है।
