Dhāraṇā 19 · The Mantra's Ascent into Silence

A whole mantra uttered letter by letter, then followed up through half-moon, point and resonance into the void — and the utterer of that void is Śiva.

This is the engineer's version of the sound dhāraṇās: the complete staircase, every step named. A compact mantra is uttered in its gross letters, and then the utterance is carried on past the letters — up through the subtle phases the tradition hears inside the close of a nasalised syllable — until what is being uttered is silence itself.

The staircase

Sthūla-varṇa-kramathe gross letters in sequence
Begin at the bottom: the mantra's letters sounded plainly, one by one, in order. The verse speaks of a piṇḍa-mantra — a compact, clustered mantra taken as one mass. Which one is not specified; use the seed-mantra of your own practice.
Ardhenduthe half-moon
At the syllable's close the sound bends into nasal resonance — the half-moon of the written candrabindu: sound curving away from articulation.
Binduthe point
Resonance gathers to a single point of hum, sound at its minimum extension — one dimensionless prick of vibration.
Nādāntathe end of resonance
The point thins to a final filament and reaches the boundary the name states: the end of nāda, where hearing has nothing further to hold.
Śūnyathe void
And then the verse says the extraordinary thing: continue the utterance there. Śūnyoccārāt — by the utterance of the void. Silence is not where the mantra stops; it is the mantra's last and highest syllable.

Working it

Move slowly enough that each stage is heard, not imagined — one full ascent may take a single unhurried breath or a long minute. The gross letters are the only stage under your control; from the half-moon upward the practice is less doing than following, and from nādānta upward it is pure following. The fruit is stated without ceremony: bhavec chivaḥ — one becomes Śiva. The mantra dissolves stage by stage, and the utterer, who was only ever the utterance's subtlest phase, dissolves with it into what was sounding all along. The later phase-lists extend this ladder further — śakti, vyāpinī, samanā, unmanā — as the parent page's account of what lies above the mind sets out; this verse is their scriptural seed.

42

पिण्डमन्त्रस्य सर्वस्य स्थूलवर्णक्रमेण तु । अर्धेन्दुबिन्दुनादान्तं शून्योच्चाराद्भवेच्छिवः ॥ ४२ ॥

By uttering any whole 'compact' mantra in the sequence of its gross letters, on up through the ardhacandra, bindu and the end of nāda, into the void — through that void-utterance one becomes Śiva.

किसी भी पिण्ड-मन्त्र के समस्त स्थूल वर्णों के क्रम से, अर्धचन्द्र-बिन्दु-नादान्त होते हुए शून्य के उच्चारण द्वारा साधक शिव बन जाता है।
