Dhāraṇā 12 · Fine as a Lotus Fibre
The central channel, fine as the fibre of a lotus stalk, meditated as inner sky — as the Goddess — and by her the God shines forth.
Break a lotus stalk gently and threads appear in the gap — filaments so fine they are nearly not there. That is the verse's measure for the madhya-nāḍī, the central channel: present, but on the very edge of being nothing. And the meditation it prescribes is not on the thread. It is on the sky inside it.
The method
Bring attention to the vertical axis of the body — madhya-saṃsthā, standing in the middle, between the paired currents of left and right that the whole svara literature maps. Do not build it thick. The instruction's exactness is in the simile bisa-sūtrābha-rūpayā: give it the width of a lotus filament, no more. Then turn the attention inside-out: the verse's compound is antar-vyomayā — meditate on her as made of inner sky. The channel is contemplated not as a tube carrying something but as a hair's-breadth of pure space running the height of you.
Then the verse does something quietly enormous with grammar: that thread of inner space is devyā, the Goddess — and tayā, by her, devaḥ prakāśate, the God shines out. Instrument, not obstacle. You do not pass through the Goddess to reach something else; she is the disclosing of him.
Why so thin?
Because attention takes the shape of its object. Held to something broad, it sprawls; held to a filament, it gathers to a filament — and awareness gathered to near-zero width is awareness on the brink of having no object at all, which is where every dhāraṇā is trying to deliver you. The thinness is a ramp toward the objectless. This verse is also the clearest statement in the group of the school's reading of the central channel: suṣumnā matters not as anatomy but as the middle — the place between every pair — and its emptiness is not its defect but its divinity.
The fineness of the image is itself the instruction. A thread the width of a lotus fibre cannot be gripped, only attended to; if the effort hardens, what is being held is imagination, not the channel. Ease the attention until the sense of a fine inner line barely survives, and remain with what remains. The svara literature adds a timing: the middle discloses itself most readily when the two side-currents run even — which is why this dhāraṇā ripens naturally at the junction of the breaths.
मध्यनाडी मध्यसंस्था बिससूत्राभरूपया । ध्यातान्तर्व्योमया देव्या तया देवः प्रकाशते ॥ ३५ ॥
The central channel (suṣumnā) is situated in the middle, fine as the fibre of a lotus-stalk. Meditating on the inner void (the Goddess) within it, by that the God is made manifest.
