Dhāraṇā 100 · The middle where Brahman streams

Cultivate neither aversion anywhere nor attachment anywhere; in the space freed from both pulls, the middle opens, and Brahman moves through it.

Attachment pulls experience toward the self; aversion pushes it away. Between the pull and the push there is a middle that almost no one has ever stood in, because one of the two forces is nearly always engaged. This dhāraṇā is the deliberate disengagement of both.

The method

The verse gives twin negative instructions with total symmetry: cultivate no dveṣa anywhere, cultivate no rāga anywhere. Note the verb — bhāvayet, the same verb the text uses for its contemplations. Aversion and attachment are here treated as things one actively cultivates, moment by moment, though the cultivation has become invisible through habit. The practice, accordingly, is not suppression of feelings that arrive but the withdrawal of sponsorship: when the pull toward a pleasant thing starts, decline to feed it; when the push against an unpleasant thing starts, decline that too. What arrives uninvited will pass uninvited if nothing tends it.

Then the verse states what happens in the space no longer occupied by either force: madhye brahma prasarpati — in the middle, Brahman glides forth. The verb is vivid, a serpent's smooth advance: not a flash or a blow, but something long present beginning to move through a channel finally left open.

The middle as a doctrine

This text has already trained its reader to find the middle of the breath — the still point between the two movements where the pause opens. Here the same structure appears at the level of the affections: rāga and dveṣa are the psyche's exhalation toward and recoil from the world, and between them lies a madhya as real as the one between breaths. The science of the breath knows the middle current as suṣumnā; the doctrinal verses know it as the gap between all constructed pairs. Every polarity, this tradition keeps discovering, guards a middle, and every middle is the same middle.

न द्वेषं भावयेत्क्वापि न रागं भावयेत्क्वचित्‌ । रागद्वेषविनिर्मुक्तौ मध्ये ब्रह्म प्रसर्पति ॥ १२३ ॥

One should cultivate aversion nowhere, nor attachment anywhere; in the freedom from both attraction and aversion, in the middle, Brahman streams forth.

न कहीं द्वेष की भावना करे, न कहीं राग की; राग और द्वेष से विनिर्मुक्त होने पर, मध्य में ब्रह्म प्रसर्पित (प्रवाहित) होता है।
