Dhāraṇā 1 · The Two Points of Arising

Attention placed where each breath is born — one point inside, one outside — until holding becomes fullness.

The Devī asked how the unnameable is entered, and this is the first thing Bhairava says. Not a philosophy, not a mantra — the breath you are drawing at this moment, attended to at the two places where it begins.

The verse calls the supreme Śakti visargātmā — she whose nature is emission, written in Sanskrit as two dots, one above the other. Those two dots are about to be given addresses in your body. She moves as the breath-pair, and each half of the pair has a birthplace: one within, at the heart, where the incoming breath ends and the outgoing is conceived; one outside, at the dvādaśānta, where the outgoing breath dies and the incoming is conceived.

The method

  1. Sit at ease and let the breath move entirely by itself. Nothing in this verse regulates it — no ratio, no count, no deepening.
  2. Follow an outgoing breath to the point where it is simply finished, and stay there for the instant before the turn.
  3. Follow the incoming breath down to the heart-region, to the point where it is finished, and stay there too.
  4. The verse's word for what you do at these points is bharaṇāt — from holding, from filling. Not gripping: resting attention there the way weight rests on the ground.

That is the whole instruction. The fruit is named with the same root: bharitā sthitiḥ, the state of fullness — the very word verse 15 used for the state of Bhairava that could not be described. What could not be pointed at has been given two physical addresses.

Why it is first

Every person who will ever read this verse is already doing the thing it points at, twenty-one thousand times a day. The doorway costs nothing and is never absent — which is exactly the text's argument about Bhairava himself. Where a commentary is wanted for these verses, note that Kṣemarāja's runs out at verse 23; the continuous commentary on the dhāraṇās is Śivopādhyāya's much later Vivṛti.

ऊर्ध्वे प्राणो ह्यधो जीवो विसर्गात्मा परोच्चरेत्‌ । उत्पत्तिद्वितयस्थाने भरणाद्भरिता स्थितिः ॥ २४ ॥

Śrī Bhairava said: The supreme Śakti, of the nature of visarga (emission), rises as prāṇa moving upward and jīva (apāna) moving downward. By fixing the mind at the two points where they are born, the state of fullness (bharitā) is attained.
